Try to plan a variety of perennials that are slug-proof. It is alarming to see how quickly slugs, and their cousin snails, can annihilate a plant. These pests are particularly fond of young perennials and those varieties with leaves that are tender, smooth, and thin. Certain perennials are unappetizing to slugs and snails, especially those with tough, hairy leaves or an unappetizing taste. Some varieties of these plants are campanula, helleborus, heuchera, or euphorbia.
Climbing plants and vines are great for covering fences and wall structures. You can hide an unsightly wall or fence, in as little as one growing season, with the right selection of climbing plant. You can also use them in your landscape to cover an existing arbor, or allow them to climb up trees, or through shrubs. There are those that have to be fixed to a support, but others will find a surface to cling to all on their own through twining stems or tendrils. Some of these plants include, wisteria, jasmine, climbing roses, clematis, honeysuckle!
Turn the handles of your garden tools into measuring rulers. Tools with long handles, such as rakes, hoes, and shovels can be converted into handy measuring sticks. Place the handles on the ground and measure them. Have a marker handy, and mark the distance with it. Now when you go to work in the garden, you will have a ruler that is large at your fingertips!
The kind of soil you use will influence the results. You may need to alter the kind of soil you use based on the types of plants you intend to grow. You can designate one area of your garden to use one specific type of soil.
Knee Pads
Get some horticulture knee pads if you find yourself kneeling on the ground a lot to do your horticulture. You will end up spending a good deal of time on your knees and this can cause a lot of pain by the end of the day. Wear knee pads meant for gardeners so that you'll be more comfortable when kneeling in your garden.
When winter comes around, save some plants by putting them in the house. It's a good idea to save any expensive plants or those that will thrive in indoor heat. Dig the plant up without damaging the roots and place it a big enough pot.
Start peas inside in a container, rather than planting the seeds outdoors. Install your plants inside and wait for the seeds to germinate. Give the seeds enough time to get stronger: growing indoors will make it easier for your plants to resist diseases and the pesky bugs. Once the seedlings are sturdy enough, they can be transplanted to their rightful place in the garden.
Now you should be able to see why organic horticulture can be such an enjoyable activity to participate in. It is quite calming and relaxing to immerse oneself in the rhythms of organic horticulture. With the proper application of these suggestions, you will be achieving amazing results in your own organic garden in no time at all!
